Nikon Lens Hood Saddle Replacement { 13 images } Created 7 Jun 2013

I am a photojournalist and a motorcycle enthusiast. You may wonder what the two have to do with each other. In my shop, Full Circle V-Twin, we have a complete machine shop. After having the lens hoods of my big Nikon lenses fall off because the knurled screw failed, I decided to craft one that would not fail.

As many of you have experienced, the big knurled screw that holds the lens hood to the lens of our big NIKON glass, strips and we are forced to resort to all kinds of crazy fixes like gaffers tape, bungee cords, rubber bands, etc. Pretty neat for a lens that costs thousands of dollars.

Well I have created a permanent fix for the problem and one that comes with a 5-year guarantee that the screw will not strip or fail.
After careful research, we determined that the piece that securing screw goes into was made of pot metal. This piece is called the saddle and that is the part I supply.

This is what your lens hood should look like. There are two main parts, the Lens Hood Screw and the Lens Hood Saddle. I supply the replacement Saddle. You will reuse your own thumb screw.

  • Please note which version of the Saddle and Knurled Knob you have. You can let me know if the top of your Knurled screw has two small screws on it or not. There were two versions of this screw.

  • Turn the lens over and use a 00 Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the saddle to the lens hood. Carefully them aside. Remove the saddle from the lens hood.

  • Remove the screw and ring washer from the assembly. Carefully them aside. You will be reusing these pieces. Also carefully remove the plastic piece from the bottom of the saddle. Set this aside. You will be reusing this as well.

  • Now unscrew the big knurled screw from the saddle and set it aside. You will be reusing this piece as well. This is what holds the hood to the lens. When you are done it should look like this photo.

  • Now take the new saddle and remove the two new screws in it. Screw the knurled screw you set aside in Step 5 into the new saddle. Carefully place the plastic piece on the new saddle.

  • Pick up the screw and ring washer you removed in Step 3 and start the screw in the opening of the knurled screw.

  • Tighten the screw into the knurled screw. When you are done, it should be recessed and look like this photo.

  • Line up the new saddle assembly with the holes in the lens hood. The plastic piece should be aligned between the saddle and the lens hood

  • Start the new screws to attach the saddle assembly to the lens hood.

  • Tighten both screws, insuring that the holes are lined up and the plastic piece is flush to the lens hood.
